Welcome to the speed hole

Welcome to the speed hole

On Saturday June 20th I had the amazing opportunity to attend and help out at the Vernon golf Spectacular!! Special Olympics Vernon and Kindale Developmental Association hosted the Vernon Golf Spectacular charity golf tournament raising funds to empower the diverse abilities of individuals with developmental disabilities in the North Okanagan. Participants had a lunch time BBQ and an afternoon of golf, followed by a dinner and a live and silent auction.

Some of Vernon’s very own AMAZING Special Olympic Athletes played the course. Including an amazing 19 year old that I have peer tutored in school and who also attended my first ever event with the school’s Drama club!! It was so good to see him golf, and he was amazing. All of the kids Who attended and who have special needs are so motivated to try there hardest and they all had lots of fun. All of the people I met at this event were so inspirational. I was asked to help run the speed hole with the event organizer!!

The speed hole worked differently then other regular holes, you are only scored by how long you took to get the ball in the hole, and not by how many swings it took you. Some people disliked this game very much, but others liked the idea of it. The funniest thing was to watch the teams strategize. We were lucky enough for the weather to hold off raining until the very last team, just as they teed off the rain started.

By the time we got back to the club house we had made it just in time, it started pouring!! Back in the club house I was asked to stay for dinner, I happily accepted. The dinner was filled with an auction and speeches. I got the honor of sitting with a woman who is a special Olympian! She got up in front of everyone and spoke about how Special Olympics B.C Vernon and Kindale Vernon have helped her in her life.

She did a fabulous job and was very inspirational. Then once the live auction started, one of the special Olympians, kept yelling yeep! (just like on storage wars). It was so cute! This event was so great and it was so amazing to see such a huge community turn out, Local dignitaries included the Mayor, various radio station personalities, Hockey players and coaches and other well known people in the community.👑
